Frequently Asked Questions

What is Bates numbering?

Bates numbering (Bates stamping) gives every page in a set of legal documents a unique sequential identifier, such as ACME000001, ACME000002 and so on. It lets lawyers, courts and opposing counsel refer to any page precisely during discovery and litigation.

How do I add Bates numbers to a PDF?

Add one or more PDFs above in production order, set a prefix (often a party or matter code), a start number and the number of digits, choose where the stamp goes, and click Apply. Each file downloads with its Bates range in the file name.

Can I Bates number multiple PDFs in sequence?

Yes. Add all the documents in order and numbering continues from one file to the next, exactly as a production requires. You also get a CSV index listing the begin and end Bates number of every document.

What format should a Bates number use?

A common format is a short prefix plus six to eight zero-padded digits, for example SMITH000001. Some productions add a suffix such as a confidentiality marker. All three parts can be set here.

Is it safe for confidential legal documents?

Yes. Stamping happens entirely in your browser, so privileged and confidential documents are never uploaded to any server.

Is this Bates stamp tool free?

Yes, free with no sign-up, no watermark and no page limits beyond your device memory.
